South Media Fire Company Kicks Off 2025 with New Approach to Recruiting Volunteers

Sometimes small is also mighty. That is exactly the vision behind South Media Fire Company’s new recruitment campaign – “South Media Strong: You Could Be One of Us.”  The 100+ year old fire company, nestled on Washington Avenue, is highlighting the benefits of its lean volunteer team – cutting edge training, stellar trucks and apparatus, and the fact that when 911 calls come in, South Media volunteer firefighters have more opportunities to claim their seat on the fire truck than firefighters who run with fire companies that have a larger membership base.

“Without a doubt, our small size is one of our strongest selling points for individuals who want to get in on the action,” says Chief Maxwell Hopkins. And action there is. The fire company responds to over 400 emergency calls a year, including vehicular accidents along major roadways like I-76, rescues, fires, medical emergencies and more.

The desire to grow its volunteer base and build greater awareness about the fire company has led to a fresh new recruitment campaign via its website at www.SouthMediaFire.com.  Lawn signs, mailings and compelling social media content are also planned to coincide with the start of the New Year. Community events will also be used as opportunities to meet more potential volunteers. These recruitment activities and others will be funded by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This comes at no cost to taxpayers.

“Volunteering at South Media is a great way to get involved and help your community. The free training we provide will help you grow and develop many life skills,” said South Media Fire Company Chief Maxwell Hopkins.

According to the chief, South Media hopes its new outreach will overcome a few hurdles: “People often confuse us with Media Fire Company, but we are actually located within Nether Providence Township and also serve Rose Valley Borough and surrounding areas,” said Chief Hopkins.  He also wants to emphasize that both blue collar and white-collar professionals have found their firefighting family at South Media Fire Company.

“The group at South Media Fire Company is so welcoming. It is so rewarding to learn so many new skills and be able to push myself to be better,” said Peggy Grover, who joined one year ago as a volunteer firefighter with her daughter.
