South Media Fire Company Promotes Fire Prevention Week Theme, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”

You may not even realize it, but you’re probably holding a lithium-ion battery right now. Nearly all the electronics you use daily and those in your home– smartphones, tablets, power tools, laptops, headphones and even toys– are powered by lithium-ion batteries.

That is why South Media Fire Company is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)–the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week (FPW) for more than 100 years– to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” The fire prevention campaign runs from October 5-11 and focuses on educating residents on safely handling lithium-ion batteries.

“Lithium-ion batteries are in so many of the devices we use every day, and while they make our lives easier, they also pose real fire risks if not handled properly,” said Chief Maxwell Hopkins. “Fire Prevention Week is a great reminder for everyone to learn simple steps they can take to stay safe at home and protect their families.”

As part of their ongoing commitment to safety, South Media Fire Company trains its members to handle lithium-ion-related emergencies, including fires involving electric vehicles, downed power lines and malfunctioning devices, ensuring volunteers are prepared to respond safely and effectively.

Residents are invited to celebrate FPW with South Media Fire Company at the Nether Providence Township’s Family Fun Day on Saturday, October 11, from 12 to 3 p.m. at Strath Haven Middle School, 200 S Providence Rd, Wallingford. Families can explore and climb aboard fire trucks, try on firefighter gear, enjoy hands-on activities and more, all while learning valuable fire safety tips from experienced volunteers. Parents can also hear about volunteering with South Media Fire Company, as the company is always recruiting and looking for new locals to join.

“We’re always looking for dedicated individuals to join our team as volunteer firefighters,” said Chief Hopkins. “It’s a rewarding way to serve your community, gain valuable skills and be part of a team that makes a real difference when it matters most.”

South Media Fire Company also encourages all residents to share and follow the 2025 FPW theme with these key safety tips:

  • Buy smart: Check for a mark from a nationally recognized testing laboratory on the packaging and product.
  • Select products carefully: Make sure any item with a lithium-ion battery has a recognized safety mark on both the product and packaging.
  • Charge devices safely: Always use the charging cables that come with the product. Never charge devices under a pillow, on a bed, or on a couch.
  • Dispose and recycle responsibly: Take used lithium-ion batteries to a designated recycling location; do not throw them in the trash or regular recycling bins.

Safeguard Your Community: Volunteer!

Fire safety starts at home, but it doesn’t have to stop there. South Media Fire Company invites residents to join the team and help keep the community safe. No experience is needed, training and gear are free, and there are many ways to volunteer. Take the first step at www.SouthMediaFire.com.
