Volunteer Spotlight: Alex Vasilescu

Nether Providence Township resident Alex Vasilescu had no idea volunteer fire companies even existed when he relocated from the Bay Area to be closer to his wife’s family in 2021. It wasn’t until he attended a neighborhood block party that he was introduced to his new neighbor, South Media Fire Company.

“I met some of the members and they asked me, ‘Have you ever considered becoming a volunteer firefighter?’ It wasn’t even on my bingo card, but I am mechanically apt and wanted to get to know my neighbors and community better,” said Alex.

“Mechanically apt” is putting it mildly, considering that Alex is a mechanical engineer. The prospect of operating a massive firetruck and other cutting-edge equipment was right up Alex’s alley. He hit the ground running, gaining valuable hands-on experience by attending weekly training drills, riding in the fire truck and shadowing experienced firefighters at emergency scenes.

“We were responding to a chimney fire, and I had no idea what to expect. I watched as all the firefighters ran up to the scene, and the chief looked at me and said, ‘Follow me and stay close.’ It was a whole new world for me,” recalled Alex.

South Media Fire Company operates with a smaller volunteer base than neighboring companies, allowing new enthusiastic members like Alex to dive in head-first, developing new skills and responding to emergency calls. With roughly two years of firefighting under his wing, Alex confidently maneuvers the fire truck to and from emergencies and swiftly springs into action when it’s time to respond.

“Everyone at South Media Fire Company is extremely welcoming, and they want you to learn. One of our members is even an instructor at Montgomery County Fire Academy and he takes the time to work with us one-on-one,” said Alex.

“I am also the father to a five-year-old and a seven-year-old, and while it can be difficult to balance it all at times, South Media instills in all of its members that family will always come first,” he added.

No prior experience is needed to volunteer with South Media Fire Company. Training and gear are provided at no cost. To get started or learn more, visit www.SouthMediaFire.com.
